Psychology - Wikipedia. Psychology is the study of behavior and mind, embracing all aspects of conscious and unconscious experience as well as thought. It is an academic discipline and a social science which seeks to understand individuals and groups by establishing general principles and researching specific cases. Psychologists attempt to understand the role of mental functions in individual and social behavior, while also exploring the physiological and biological processes that underlie cognitive functions and behaviors. Psychologists explore behavior and mental processes, including perception, cognition, attention, emotion (affect), intelligence, phenomenology, motivation (conation), brain functioning, and personality. This extends to interaction between people, such as interpersonal relationships, including psychological resilience, family resilience, and other areas. Psychologists of diverse orientations also consider the unconscious mind. In addition, or in opposition, to employing empirical and deductive methods, some. Psychology has been described as a . By many accounts psychology ultimately aims to benefit society. Many do scientific research on a wide range of topics related to mental processes and behavior, and typically work in university psychology departments or teach in other academic settings (e. Some are employed in industrial and organizational settings, or in other areas. This definition enjoyed widespread currency for decades. However, this meaning was contested, notably by radical behaviorists such as John Watson, who in his 1. Also since James defined it, the term more strongly connotes techniques of scientific experimentation. Historians note that Greek philosophers, including Thales, Plato, and Aristotle (especially in his De Anima treatise). This body of knowledge involves insights drawn from introspection and observation, as well as techniques for focused thinking and acting. It frames the universe as a division of, and interaction between, physical reality and mental reality, with an emphasis on purifying the mind in order to increase virtue and power. An ancient text known as The Yellow Emperor's Classic of Internal Medicine identifies the brain as the nexus of wisdom and sensation, includes theories of personality based on yin. Chinese scholarship focused on the brain advanced in the Qing Dynasty with the work of Western- educated Fang Yizhi (1. Wang Qingren emphasized the importance of the brain as the center of the nervous system, linked mental disorder with brain diseases, investigated the causes of dreams and insomnia, and advanced a theory of hemispheric lateralization in brain function. A central idea of the Upanishads is the distinction between a person's transient mundane self and their eternal unchanging soul. Divergent Hindu doctrines, and Buddhism, have challenged this hierarchy of selves, but have all emphasized the importance of reaching higher awareness. Yoga is a range of techniques used in pursuit of this goal. Much of the Sanskrit corpus was suppressed under the British East India Company followed by the British Raj in the 1. However, Indian doctrines influenced Western thinking via the Theosophical Society, a New Age group which became popular among Euro- American intellectuals. In Germany, Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz (1. Christian Wolff identified psychology as its own science, writing Psychologia empirica in 1. Psychologia rationalis in 1. This notion advanced further under Immanuel Kant, who established the idea of anthropology, with psychology as an important subdivision. However, Kant explicitly and notoriously rejected the idea of experimental psychology, writing that . However, this discipline did not yet embrace experimentation. Wundt, in turn, came to Leipzig University, establishing the psychological laboratory which brought experimental psychology to the world. Wundt focused on breaking down mental processes into the most basic components, motivated in part by an analogy to recent advances in chemistry, and its successful investigation of the elements and structure of material. Stanley Hall who studied with Wundt, formed a psychology lab at Johns Hopkins University in Maryland, which became internationally influential. Hall, in turn, trained Yujiro Motora, who brought experimental psychology, emphasizing psychophysics, to the Imperial University of Tokyo. Catell, who also studied with eugenicist Francis Galton, went on to found the Psychological Corporation. Wittmer focused on mental testing of children; Scott, on selection of employees. Structuralism sought to analyze and classify different aspects of the mind, primarily through the method of introspection. In 1. 89. 0 James wrote an influential book, The Principles of Psychology, which expanded on the realm of structuralism, memorably described the human . This approach is based upon the idea that individuals experience things as unified wholes. Rather than breaking down thoughts and behavior into smaller elements, as in structuralism, the Gestaltists maintained that whole of experience is important, and differs from the sum of its parts. Other 1. 9th- century contributors to the field include the German psychologist Hermann Ebbinghaus, a pioneer in the experimental study of memory, who developed quantitative models of learning and forgetting at the University of Berlin. The first meeting of the International Congress of Psychology took place in Paris, in August 1. World's Fair celebrating the centennial of the French Revolution. William James was one of three Americans among the four hundred attendees. The American Psychological Association was founded soon after, in 1. The International Congress continued to be held, at different locations in Europe, with wider international participation. The Sixth Congress, Geneva 1. Russian, Chinese, and Japanese, as well as Esperanto. After a hiatus for World War I, the Seventh Congress met in Oxford, with substantially greater participation from the war- victorious Anglo- Americans. In 1. 92. 9, the Congress took place at Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut, attended by hundreds of members of the American Psychological Association. University of Michigan psychologist Dorwin Cartwright reported that university researchers began large- scale propaganda research in 1. In the 1. 95. 0s, the Rockefeller Foundation and Ford Foundation collaborated with the Central Intelligence Agency to fund research on psychological warfare. Freudian psychoanalysts were expelled and persecuted under the anti- Jewish policies of the Nazi Party, and all psychologists had to distance themselves from Freud and Adler. This psychotherapy aimed to align suitable Germans with the overall goals of the Reich; as described by one physician: . Alexander Mitscherlich founded a prominent applied psychoanalysis journal called Psyche and with funding from the Rockefeller Foundation established the first clinical psychosomatic medicine division at Heidelberg University. In 1. 97. 0, psychology was integrated into the required studies of medical students. Thus, university psychology departments trained large numbers of students, for whom positions were made available at schools, workplaces, cultural institutions, and in the military. An especial focus was pedology, the study of child development, regarding which Lev Vygotsky became a prominent writer. Luria, and Aron Zalkind) were denounced; Ivan Pavlov (posthumously) and Stalin himself were aggrandized as heroes of Soviet psychology. There emerged a new field called . Interdisciplinary studies became popular and scholars such as Georgy Shchedrovitsky developed systems theory approaches to human behavior. Chinese psychologists were encouraged to focus on education and language learning, with the aspiration that education would enable modernization and nationalization. John Dewey, who lectured to Chinese audiences in 1. Chancellor T'sai Yuan- p'ei introduced him at Peking University as a greater thinker than Confucius. Kuo Zing- yang who received a Ph. They developed a concept of . In 1. 95. 1 the Academy created a Psychology Research Office, which in 1. Institute of Psychology. Most leading psychologists were educated in the United States, and the first concern of the Academy was re- education of these psychologists in the Soviet doctrines. Child psychology and pedagogy for nationally cohesive education remained a central goal of the discipline. This organization became the International Council of Women Psychologists after World War II, and the International Council of Psychologists in 1. Several associations including the Association of Black Psychologists and the Asian American Psychological Association have arisen to promote non- European racial groups in the profession. Some of these divisions, such as the Society for the Psychological Study of Social Issues and the American Psychology. It holds the Interamerican Congress of Psychology and had 1. The European Federation of Professional Psychology Associations, founded in 1. At least 3. 0 other international groups organize psychologists in different regions. Parapsychology, hypnotism, and psychism were major topics of the early International Congresses. But students of these fields were eventually ostractized, and more or less banished from the Congress in 1. Philosopher of science Thomas Kuhn's 1. Skeptics have suggested that personality, thinking, and emotion, cannot be directly measured and are often inferred from subjective self- reports, which may be problematic. Experimental psychologists have devised a variety of ways to indirectly measure these elusive phenomenological entities. Critics inside and outside the field have argued that mainstream psychology has become increasingly dominated by a .

Startup Has a Clever Tool to Get Non- Techies to Code: Excel. Paul Katsen worked at a consulting firm, and he was in charge of analytics. This meant his colleagues would ask him to write scripts that could gather data across the workforce and beyond. In the beginning, he tried to teach his coworkers how to use the tools he had built, but he eventually realized they weren’t all that interested in learning anything close to programming skills. Turns out, this was a problem at Facebook too. Even at a company known for its technological innovation, Pinkus told Katsen, there were business people who had difficulty using new technologies. Founded by Katsen, Pinkus, and a third entrepreneur named Jason Tokoph, the company has spent the last year and a half building a tool called Blockspring for Spreadsheets, with the idea of turning the world’s one billion spreadsheet users into software engineers. Essentially, the product is a series of coding tools, or APIs, that can be used from inside a spreadsheet. It plugs into popular applications like Excel and Google Spreadsheets. Companies like Codecademy are trying to teach coding skills via the internet. Coding “bootcamps” are popping up in various cities, offering crash courses in more advanced skills. And companies from Blockspring to Google are offering tools that seek to simplify the coding process itself. Startup Company Name Generator. Go to 2-3 keywords tool >>. Katsen describes Blockspring for Spreadsheets as an index of APIs, or application programming interfaces. Basically, these are tools that other companies offer over the net, tools that can be used to build new applications. Katsen calls these “building blocks”—hence the name of his startup. Via these APIs, Blockspring lets you access a wide range of popular services, from social media analytics software Shared. Count (which lets you count online “shares,” “likes,” and tweets) to text analysis tools from the likes Alchemy API, Aylien, indico, and Lateral. Katsen and his cohort have even included the API from AI startup Metamind that can help analyze data in more complex ways. According to Katsen, some early testers have already made use of the service. Looking to hire a new developer, he says, one company tapped a Google Calendar API via Blockspring, building spreadsheet application that could show which of the company’s engineers were free when a candidate was scheduled for an interview. At another company, he says, a lawyer with no technical skills tapped an algorithm provided by a company called Indico, using it to identify the political affiliation of people involved in court cases. Does It Work? Is the service really as easy to use as Katsen says it is? I downloaded the plug- in myself and tried it out. After I created an account on the site, Blockspring walked me through the whole process in simple step- by- step instructions. Combining a few simple functions, I created, in a matter of minutes, a database that pulled my recent WIRED articles from Microsoft’s Bing search engine and mapped them onto related tweets, shares, and pins. That gave me a picture of which of my articles did the best on social media. Blockspring would also refresh my data every time a new result came in, so I could simply go back to the spreadsheet in the future instead of typing in the functions everyday to get new results. I also built data visualizations—word clouds of the most popular topics I covered. I dug into my news stories and saw which topics were peripherally associated with the articles I wrote. Katsen also showed me how to create nifty heat maps of the cities in the US, given public data. Open Versus Closed. Katsen says the team is still building out the index of APIs that could be incorporated into Blockspring, and they’re working hard to get as many tools as possible onto the system. Eventually, he says, popular business tools from companies such as Slack and Tableau will be available from Blockspring. Some companies prevent third- party apps and services from accessing their APIs, including Netflix and Linked. In. But Katsen believes this will change. He thinks that any company that bars third part services only creates an opportunity for a new venture to fill in that gap. They’re afraid to die of a thousand cuts from a thousand startups,” Katsen says. And combined they get very, very powerful. That’s a big reason why we exist.”CORRECTION 1. AM ET 0. 7/2. 9/1. This article originally stated that the Blockspring co- founder who worked at Facebook was Jason Tokoph. It has been corrected to show that it was Don Pinkus who worked at Facebook, not Tokoph. How can I stop MsMpEng.exe starting at startup? Real time protection is off, no scans are scheduled.Disable or Stop Auto CHKDSK During Windows Startup. One of Windows annoying so called “features” is the Windows disk checker (Chkdsk) being automatically executed whenever you don’t shut down your computer properly. The blue colored screen appears on Windows XP or black colored screen for Windows Vista and 7 during boot that says: Checking file system on C: The type of the file system is NTFS. One of your disks needs to be checked for consistency. You may cancel the disk check, but it is strongly recommended that you continue. To skip disk checking, press any key within 1. Simply pressing any key would stop Check disk from running but when you restart your computer, you’ll get this prompt again because Windows still thinks the drive needs scanning and will keep reminding you until it is checked. Sometimes, even after letting Check disk scan the drive that it wants to, the checking process would still automatically run at next boot and it wants to check the drives again. What we have found out is that when Windows detects there has been an improper shutdown or a drive such as a USB flash drive has been ejected before the system has finished with it, a secret value is stored on the drive to let Windows know about the issue and force a Check disk request. This value is known as a “Dirty bit” and is a single hex value (2 values for Windows 8) that Windows looks at on boot for system drives or when the the external device is inserted. If the fsutil tool reports that the drive letter is not dirty, the disk checking process will not want to run for that drive. However, when a drive letter is being marked as dirty, we discovered the location of the hex values on the drive that are being modified and resetting the dirty bit hex value to default will magically stop the auto disk check on boot. While resetting the dirty bit manually would be the best solution for many situations, it is more difficult to do on system drives such as C because they will be locked and not allow editing from within Windows to change the bit value. Another option for these drives is to simply instruct Windows not to bother checking whether they have been marked as dirty on boot, so you’ll never get a request to auto check them again. Here’s how to disable or stop Check disk from scanning your drives in Windows boot for Windows XP, Vista, 7 and Windows 8. There are people who suggest editing the registry to do this which works if done properly, but the recommended and safer way to disable auto Check disk from starting up is using the /x switch via the chkntfs command in Command Prompt. This switch will exclude a drive from the default boot time check. To get to the Command Prompt, go to: Start - > Run (or Win key+R) - > type cmd and press enter. If you have drive C: as the drive you want exclude, then the command to disable chkdsk from scanning the C: drive would be: chkntfs /x c: If you have a second drive to exclude, C: and D: for example, you can disable Check disk with the command below. Simply add all the drives you want to exclude in this way, separating them with a space. Sometimes users don’t like editing the registry or using the command prompt, which is why for your convenience, we have created a simple batch file to run the command for you. Download and run the . Make sure to right click and “Run as Administrator”. Download Autocheck Boot Exclude. There are some experts who believe that it’s better not to disable Check disk from scanning your hard drive. But sometimes it makes sense if you don’t want it to scan your hard drive because if it finds anything bad, damaged files will be changed to File. CHK. When that happens, you will have to use data recovery software or some third party tools to recognize and recover the CHK files. There are other important functions the Windows chkntfs command performs you should know about, which are discussed in more detail on page 2. Eastern Kentucky University.
